ABSOLUTE CHAMPION

DOB Breeding: 2001 bay/brown gelding. Marauding (NZ) - Beauty Belle (Aus) by Ideal Planet
Owned by: Mr & Mrs Eddie Wong Ming Chak
Raced In: Hong Kong
Major Race Wins: Hong Kong: Gr 1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint, Gr 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize, Gr 1 Centenary Sprint Cup, Gr 3 HSBC Premier Bowl.
Comment: Absolute Champion was one of the revelations of the HK racing season in 2006/7 and was awarded the title of “Champion Sprinter” at the HKJC Awards Ceremony in July 2007.

When Absolute Champion smashed a 1200m track record dating back to 1985 in the HSBC Premier Bowl, some queried whether it was a freak outcome but he silenced the doubters with a four and a quarter length win in the CXHK Sprint, in the process lowering the 1200m track record by another three-tenths of a second. He later added the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1) in a hard fought win from Planet Ruler. He won three of his four races in 2006/07, his sole defeat when chasing home Scintillation in the Centenary Sprint Cup (HK Gr 1).

After finishing 2nd to Sacred Kingdom in the G1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Sprint in December 2007, Absolute Champion reversed the placings in the G1 Centenary Sprint Cup in January 2008 - the placings reversed yet again in the second leg of the Champion Sprint Series in February when Sacred Kingdom was the victor. Between them, the results of these two exceptional sprinters well and truly underlined Australian-bred thoroughbreds dominance of international sprint races.

Major Race Wins: G1 Australian Guineas, G1 Lightning Stakes, G1 Australia Stakes (twice), G1 TJ Smith, G1 BTC Cup, G1 Doomben 10,000 (twice), 3rd G1 Hong Kong International Sprint
Comment: Gathering a huge fan base owing to his striking baldy face, Apache Cat won over the hardest of racing assessors with a string of five consecutive Group 1 victories in the early part of 2008.

He was already a Group 1 winner of the prestigious Australian Guineas at three, but this sequence of wins as a 5yo propelled him to the top echelon of short course performers in Australia and indeed the world.

Trainer Greg Eurell immediately aimed him at the Hong Kong International Sprint and ‘the Cat’ turned in a typically tough performance, when charging at the line to grab third place.

In 2009, he has continued to build on his great record, bringing his Group 1 tally to eight, with repeat wins in the Australia Stakes and Doomben 10,000. He is now the winner of 18 races and $4.395million in prizemoney.

He won two races during his Dubai campaign (another Australian horse - Smart and Mighty – also winning during the Carnival). The 5-time winner showed the value of his UAE form with a fine third in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap in June 2007.
